Wallingford Boys and Girls Club

Jermaine Mitchell

Jermaine Mitchell is a Youth Development Counselor at the Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club. Since the age of 16, he has been a mentor for youth in the New Haven. Every Monday through Friday, Jermaine juggles his profession as an Insurance Agent, while commuting from his hometown, to spend 3 hours with kids at the Wallingford club. Since 2008, Jermaine has mentored youth in both formal and informal settings. Now that he has many youth to see, he spends his weekends picking up youth who he’s met over the years and take them out to special outings, such as: water parks, movies, go-karting, and more. Jermaine has mentored at the following places: LEAP After School Program, Waterbury Youth Service Center, Boys & Girls Club of Meriden, Boys & Girls Club of Milford; and we are very thankful to now have him in the Wallingford community. The kids at the Club couldn’t be more ecstatic as well. Jermaine started the “Passport to Manhood” program at the Club, intended for middle school boys. The program provides an intimate environment where members can discuss living skills, such as: goal setting, building confidence, healthy habits, physical fitness, and more; all of which are important characteristics that Jermaine strives to encompass in his life daily as well.

Anthony Holmes

Anthony Holmes is a positive role model for the Wallingford community. He is currently a freshman at Wilcox Technical High School and this will be his second year attending the Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club’s After school Program. Since his attendance at the Club, staff have noticed that he's been more focused on his academics and understanding of how his actions can make an impact in the lives of others. Last year, his lowest grade was a C+. So far this year, his lowest grade has been an A-. Anthony has been an active member of the Club's leadership team, known as Torch Club. Staff can rely on Anthony to help younger members with homework and games. Anthony also helps staff with cleaning and painting. On weekends, Anthony asks his neighbors how he can assist them and helps with yard work, such as raking and shoveling. Anthony also offers to help staff with cleaning their cars on snowy days; he has also previously volunteered with Master’s Manna. Anthony spent this summer as a Leader in Training at a sleepaway camp in Lyme, CT. This was a voluntary position and he assisted with leading kids in activities. Anthony is also a blue belt in karate. Anthony hasn’t had an easy path in life, but he chooses to involve himself in positive things, which bring out the best qualities in him. The Club is very thankful to have Anthony as a part of their community, he is an inspiration to us.
